Our Schools Governance is About to Change. What You Need to Know.

AB 2117 is an education governance reform bill that would restructure how California's K–12 education system is managed by creating an appointed Education Commissioner and changing the role of the elected Superintendent of Public Instruction.

• Bureaucratic restructuring without improving classrooms. Changing governance does not directly address issues such as reading and math proficiency, school safety, teacher quality, or parental involvement.

• Concerns about future policy direction. Consolidating authority could make it easier for future administrations to implement statewide curriculum or policy changes they oppose, with fewer independent checks.

This is about governance and accountability. The bill shifts power from an official directly elected by Californians (AKA by the people) to one appointed by the Governor, potentially reducing voter influence over statewide education policy.
